about

LUCE, which stars Naomi Watts, Octavia Spencer, Tim Roth and Kelvin Harrison, Jr, will be released by NEON in theaters on August 2nd. Stacked with amazing performances and adapted from JC Lee’s acclaimed play, director Julius Onah has created an intense, multi-layered and deeply entertaining look at identity in today’s America.

Certain to be one of the most talked-about films of the year, LUCE is a smart psychological thriller that will leave audiences breathless.

An all-star high school athlete and accomplished debater, Luce (Kelvin Harrison Jr.) is a poster boy for the new American Dream. As are his parents (Naomi Watts and Tim Roth), who adopted him from a war-torn country a decade earlier. When Luce’s teacher (Octavia Spencer) makes a shocking discovery in his locker, Luce’s stellar reputation is called into question. But is he really at fault or is Ms. Wilson preying on dangerous stereotypes?

Says Onah: “For LUCE to work it was essential that the sonic landscape of the film created the right atmosphere for the ambiguity of the story. It's a movie about the limits of our perceptions. It explores how those limits can have a dangerous impact on the lives of others in a society where power and privilege have never been distributed equally. I had already been a huge fan of Ben and Geoff's work for the innovative, complex and haunting scores they created for everything they've worked on. After speaking with them I knew there was no one else I wanted to entrust LUCE to.

Using organs and jungle music, they created a stark, elegant and wholly original score that set the perfect tone for audiences to find their way through the story of the film. It was imperative that the score never indicated or became didactic. Their natural instincts as storytellers perfectly suited the material while also elevating the work of everything we saw on screen. It was a dream collaboration and the fruits of their labor speak for itself. I can't wait to listen to their brilliant work on LUCE over and over again.

Says Ben Salisbury: “The script for LUCE had such an impact on us, that we not only jumped at the chance to be involved, but also immediately came up with a theme for Luce himself. This was one of those rare occasions where our very first response, informed by Julius Onah’s incredibly strong vision, ended up being the catalyst for the whole score.

The music is predominately performed on church organ, which seemed the ideal instrument to provide the sort of ‘cold emotion’ that was often required, and could also be used to build tension and contribute to the general sense of unease.

It was a real privilege to be involved in a film where the drama is so nuanced, and the character allegiances and emotions are constantly shifting. When a film purposefully asks difficult questions, and doesn’t attempt to provide easy answers, you are obliged as composers, to leave the musical ‘sledgehammer’ alone. This is often a very good thing!”
